Worthog Frequently Asked Questions

Q: My only reservations are about the valve...does it draw air into the wort when it's partially open? And I'm a little leery of using something the size of a garden hose for runoff.- Denny Conn

A: The ball valve inside has about a 1/4 inch opening (about the same flow rate as a bottling bucket spigot). I use a garden hose barbed fitting that reduces down to 3/8 inch, so I can use my regular Tygon brewery tubing. Make sure the garden hose fitting is tight. If air bubbles do get trapped in the line, give it a few pinches and the bubbles will work their way out.

Q: I like spigot type ball valves. Yours looks like a threaded valve, is it?

A: The chrome plated ball valve that we use, is a 1/4 turn ball valve. That means, if you turn the valve 1/4 of a full rotation, it will be 100% open. It is the same construction as other commercial ball valves.

Q: Does the chrome plated brass hold up to the acidity of wort?

A: Chrome plating is very hard and resistant to chemical cleaners, sanitizers and wort.

Q: Why the hell would I buy your device, when I can put my own together from parts from the hardware store for half the cost?

A: When we first built the Worthog it was for our own use and we had a hard time finding stainless steel washers, hose clamps and food grade o-rings. We had to start our own buisness in order to order some of the parts needed. After making so many of them for friends and brewclub members, we decided to offer them to everyone. We know that the Worthog is not for everyone, but those who do not want to spend time and money tracking down the correct parts are thankful that this product exists. We do this for them.

Q: I hope that you don't plan on making a ton of money on this, because it ain't going to happen.

A: If someone is paying you to make a living, anything is possible.

Q: What does Patent Pending mean? I can come up with the same parts you used and make my own.

A: You can build your own, we have no problems with that. If you build something similar and try to sell it, you might have a problem.

-

Q: Why don't you include a female GHT barbed fitting and a few feet of hose with the Worthog?

A: I now have a source for nylon FGHT to 3/8 inch barbed fittings. If you would like one included with your order, please include $5 extra.

-

Q: Do I still need a false bottom in the cooler after installing the Worthog?

A: No, the stainless braid acts as a false bottom, seperating the grain from the liquid.
